아이폰에서 VoIP 이용하기 : Truphone

애플의 아이폰에서 VoIP를 이용할 수 있는 방법에 대해서 몇 가지 소개해 드린 적이 있는데, 이번에는 Mobile VoIP의 선두주자인 Truphone을 아이폰에서 이용할 수 있다는 소식이 전해졌다. Truphone은 자신의 공식 PR 블로그를 통해서 이 소식을 전해 주었는데, 현재 미국 샌디에이고에서 열리고 있는 "DEMOfall 07" 행사에서 350여 관중 앞에서 직접 데모를 통해 보여주었다고 한다.

지난 번에 몇 차례 소개 드렸던 SoonR나 IM+ for Skype의 경우 외부 PC에 Skype 프로그램이 대신 전화를 걸어주는 역할을 했다면, 이번에 Truphone에서 소개한 서비스의 경우 아이폰에서 지원하는 WiFi를 이용한 진정한 VoIP 서비스라고 주장하고 있는데..아직 상용 서비스로 제공되는 것이 아니라 데모 수준이라.. 향후 어떤 모습으로 서비스가 될지에 대해서는 좀 더 지켜봐야 할 것으로 보인다.

아래는 Truphone에서 이야기하는 이번 데모의 특징인데 참고하시기 바란다.

• Many people have called for true VoIP calling on Apple's iPhone. Truphone will today prove that it is possible using the iPhone's in-built Wi-Fi capability.
• Truphone's demonstration will comprise two iPhones connected to Wi-Fi on the DEMOfall 07 stage. A VoIP call will be initiated from one handset, routed via Wi-Fi and the Internet to Truphone's servers, and then back again to the access point and onwards to the destination handset - a 100% IP phone call.
• Today's event will be a live demonstration only and is not a commercial launch of Truphone on the iPhone.
• Truphone does not need to unlock the SIM in order to operate its service for the iPhone.

그런데 이번 데모 자체가 워낙 초기 버전이라 아이폰을 가진 사람 누구나 이용할 수는 없을 것으로 보인다. BlogNation에 따르면 "To say the application isn’t yet ready for prime time would be a pretty major understatement as it currently requires the use of terminal on the iPhone to tell the iPhone to use its on-board SIP stack to place the call over WiFi instead of via the SIM card. To use the terminal application, in turn requires that you first Jailbreak the phone using an application like iBrickr or iFuntastic. This is not an application for the inexperienced or the faint of heart."라고 밝히고 있는데, 이 소식통에 의하면 Truphone은 약 4주 후에 일반 이용자를 대상으로 한 베타 테스트를 진행할 계획을 가지고 있다고 한다.
