http://screenenglish.tistory.com

Ready for 'All the King's Men'
'All the King's Men' 개봉 박두

▶ Contents
The first film of "All The King's Men" won the Best Picture
Academy Award in 1949. This new version is adapted from the
novel and directed by recent Oscar-winner Steven Zaillian.

He won a statuette for his 1993 Schindler's List screenplay.
And Zaillian insists the earlier All The King's Men was not an
influence on his film. It is populism that brings Willie Stark to
power; but once in office, he soon decides that to be effective,
he must do whatever it takes to exercise and increase that power.
All The King's Men also features Jude Law as journalist Jack Burden,
who sacrifices his principles to share in the power as a
top aid to the governor; Kate Winslet plays Anne, the tragic woman
who finds herself drawn to both men.

George Clooney pleads for peace in Darfur

Clooney predicted mass slaughter if the September 30th
deadline is allowed to pass without firm Council intervention.
"So after September 30th, you won't need the U.N. You'll simply
need men with shovels and bleached white linen and headstones.

United Nations investigators have rejected the U.S. characterization
of the killings in Darfur as genocide, saying it does not meet the
strict legal definition of the term. But in an impassioned address,
Clooney rejected that distinction.

"The United States called it genocide.
For you, it's called ethnic cleansing.
But make no mistake. It is the first genocide of 21st century.
And if it continues unchecked, it will not be the last."

Sitting alongside the French leader, President Bush said the United States and France have a common goal: preventing Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon.

Mr. Bush said he would like to solve the matter diplomatically,
and repeated his administration's offer to join European-led talks
with Iran if Tehran suspends its enrichment of uranium, a process
that yields nuclear material that could be used to build a weapon.
Mr. Chirac said the United States and France see eye-to-eye and
are both determined to move ahead in a constructive manner. He
said that the first thing that must be done is to bring Iran's
enrichment activities to an end.

Subaru Finds the Most Distant Galaxy

▶ Contents
Two studies in the journal Nature suggest that galaxies were
forming when the universe was only six percent of its present age.
That would be not long after the so-called Big Bang.

In one paper, Japanese astronomers, led by Masanori Iye of the
National Astronomical Observatory in Tokyo, report discovering the
farthest galaxy yet seen. Iye's team used the Subaru telescope in
Hawaii. They confirmed the age and distance of the galaxy by its
redness. The redder an object is, the farther away it is. This is
because light from receding bodies shifts downward into these
lower light frequencies, just as the sound of a passing car horn
drops in pitch.

2,000 Palestinians held a protest in Gaza, accusing the pope of
leading a new Crusade against the Muslim world. The Vatican
issued a statement Saturday saying Pope Benedict is sorry that
Muslims found his speech offensive.

But that may not quell the outrage. Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood
said the Pope's statement does not go far enough. The
Brotherhood, which has inspired Islamic movements across the
Arab world, said the pope made a grave mistake, which can only
be corrected by a personal apology. The rage unleashed by
Benedict's comments has raised fears of violent anti-Western
protests like those that followed the publication of caricatures of the
Prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper in February
